- Survey school families about their interest in walking to school and possible barriers that they see in beginning this healthy habit.
- Advertise and select a Walking School Bus (WSB) coordinator.
- Send another memo to families saying that the program will begin, stating benefits and asking for families to sign up if they are interested.
- Contact all the families that returned the form in #2 above and ask them for their availability to walk the school bus (in other words, be a “captain” or “driver”).
- The Coordinator now reviews all families and groups them into buses of 8-10 walkers based on availability and where their houses are located.
- Based on the availability above, send each of the families a contract to sign and the schedule and route of their bus. Let them know when the bus will begin as well. Hand out safety information.
- The coordinator should have safety vests for each parent “driver” or at least for each bus. It helps to have many vests so they are very available and don’t have to be passed around.
- Coordinator or volunteers can work on getting carts for the backpacks, a “miles walked” tracking system, recruiting more walkers, educating students on backpack safety and walking safety, in general.
- Publicize your success! It is great for communities to realize what is happening, to tout your own school’s healthy initiative and to have fun!
