Act now to keep our regional food system strong

As we prepare for changes to the policy landscape in 2017 we are assessing opportunities and challenges. Time is of the essence in order to continue effectively advocating for a strong regional food system and food policies that positively impact the nutritional, economic, social, and environmental health of Greater Kansas City. We’re busier than ever now.

Here’s what we’re doing:

1. Tracking Transition Teams. Cabinet appointments by President-elect Trump and Missouri Governor-elect Eric Greitens will significantly influence implementation and interpretation of current and future policy.

2. Mobilizing During Lame Duck Session. We are identifying what work must be completed in advance of administration changes in January. The Child Nutrition Act reauthorization must be re-extended or receive bicameral approval during the current lame duck session. The USDA need to publish rules to protect farmers freedom of speech and fair competition rights but riders placed on budget bills now under consideration threaten their ability to do so before January.

We will alert you to opportunities to act during the lame duck session and beyond. See below for more details on what you can do today.

3. Assessing What’s Ahead. We are working with national and regional partners to identify and plan for upcoming battles including the 2018 Farm Bill, federal and state budget shortfalls and shifting departmental priorities. Here’s a list of a few of the immediate areas of concern for government regulation, funding and programs:

  • agricultural conservation
  • environmental protection agency
  • food safety and labeling
  • school food
  • state level pre-emption legislation restricting local authority
  • WIC, SNAP and all other nutrition assistance programs
  • USDA Healthy Food Financing Initiative
  • USDA Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive Grant Program
