Gold Sponsor: Michael and Christine Hursey, Casa Somerset B&B and Organic Farm
Michael and Christine Hursey are proprietors of Casa Somerset, a four-room bed and breakfast on a beautiful six acres in Somerset, Kansas. Located about 45 minutes south of Kansas City, it offers a quick getaway from city life for enjoying all the fruits of country life, including many local food products.
Michael has been involved with the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition since about 2012, when he attended Slow Food Terra Madre in Turin, Italy as a US Delegate. There, he heard people from all over the world tell their food stories, and knew that he wanted to be even more involved at all levels with our local food system.
Michael values the friends and partners he’s connected with in his fight for social and food justice. Because of what he’s learned through local food advocacy groups, he and Christine recently went to the state capital to lobby for the reduction and ultimate removal of Kansas’ sales tax on groceries.
“I appreciate having this forum for making food—good, clean and fair food—more available for everyone. I have gained such a network of knowledge,” he says.
In 2016 Casa Somerset B&B and Organic Farm was recognized by KC Healthy Kids’ Carrot Gold program for excellence in supporting local food producers, acting sustainably and offering healthy choices.
