Karen Siebert is public policy/advocacy advisor at Harvesters—The Community Food Network. She has been involved with the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition since its beginning in 2007, and recently shared this advocacy alert with the steering committee. We’re publishing it with her permission.
On June 29, the Senate passed a bipartisan farm bill that protects and strengthens the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, The Emergency Food Assistance Program and the other federal nutrition programs on a vote of 86-11. This puts us in a very strong position as we go into the conference process to negotiate a compromise bill with the House, which passed a version of the bill that includes drastic cuts and harmful structural changes to SNAP.
But for now we celebrate and say “thank you” to our senators. This is a great opportunity to reach out in a positive way to our Kansas and Missouri senators, who all supported the nutrition programs by opposing harmful SNAP amendments and voting for a strong bipartisan bill.
Below is an advocacy alert to share with your networks that thanks them for their efforts and asks them to thank their senators as well.
And thank you to all of our advocates for helping to protect food assistance for millions of Americans who are struggling to put food on the table. Our work is not yet done, but today we celebrate!

For Kansas Senator and Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts
Here are messages to share with Kansas Senator and Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, who made a key motion to table several harmful SNAP amendments. His leadership to create and pass a bipartisan farm bill that protects SNAP and TEFAP is greatly appreciated.
As a constituent, I want to thank Senator Roberts for his development of a bipartisan farm bill that protects SNAP and increases funding for TEFAP, providing an important safety net for our farmers and our families.
In particular, I want to thank the senator for his motion to table the harmful SNAP amendments that would have taken food assistance away from millions of food insecure families, children, seniors and veterans.
As the House and Senate now turn to negotiating a final version of the farm bill in conference, we urge Senator Roberts to continue standing up for Kansans by working with his colleagues to ensure that the final version of the bill protects SNAP and invests in TEFAP.
For Kansas Senator Jerry Moran and Missouri Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt
Here are messages for Kansas Senator Jerry Moran and Missouri Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, who all rejected the harmful SNAP amendments and voted in favor of the bipartisan farm bill.
Thank you for voting to support a bipartisan farm bill that protects SNAP and increases funding for TEFAP.
Your support of Senator Roberts’ motion to table the harmful SNAP amendments is especially appreciated.
Food assistance programs like SNAP and TEFAP let all people participate in their local economies and make our communities stronger. Thank you for your support for a strong farm bill that invests in food assistance and provides a safety net for our local farmers and families.
As the House and Senate now turn to negotiating a final version of the farm bill in conference, we urge [SENATOR] to continue standing up for [STATERS] by working with [HIS/HER] colleagues to ensure that the final version also protects SNAP and invests in TEFAP.
