“We have learned a lot from the training and have learned a lot and new ways of working with the children and families we provide care for. One of the main things we learned is that communication with both the parents and children is very important and through communication we can better care for the children. We have learned to be more patient with the children and when "bad" behavior is happening to not assume the child is doing it on purpose there is a greater reason why and the way to better the situation is through communication with the parent and child. Another thing that we also learned and probably taken for granted is self care and how important it is to give ourselves self care actually helps us be better caregivers and because of this we see we are having better relationships with the families we care for and the children are now more open to sharing their feelings.” - Cotton Candy Daycare
“One of the changes that I have seen is that teachers are more open to the idea that there may be something that is causing the behaviors that they are seeing in the classroom instead of just assuming that the child is choosing to "be bad". I don't think that the possible impact of trauma is the first thing that they think about, but when I am able to talk them through their concerns and suggest trauma, they are more open to the idea that trauma could be a factor. I think the concept of kids "needing" attention rather than "wanting" attention has had an impact. It may not be the first thing.” -Open Minds Child Development Center, KCK
Trauma informed care is a perspective which assists people in understanding how widespread trauma is, how trauma impacts people and ways in which people can sensitively and safely approach others. It was initially developed for people in human service fields but it is applicable to anyone who interacts with others. The importance of self-care is also emphasized during most trauma informed care trainings.
Trauma informed care training is currently being offered to 20 early childhood education centers in the Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS metropolitan areas by Nancy C. Osborn, Ph.D. Dr. Osborn brings her 30 year plus history of providing therapy to children and families, and her years of providing trauma informed care training to mental health professionals and teachers to this project.
