Ultimate Eat Local Recipe Challenge
The Eat Local Recipe Challenge is open to kids in pre-K through 8th grade in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri. The contest asks children to work together with their families to create a nutritious lunch recipe using at least one local ingredient.

The Farm to School Academy recipe contest was created to empower children and their families to get out into their communities and find local food at farmer’s markets and grocery stores. Children are also able to use food grown in community or family gardens. The contest asks children to develop their lunch themed recipe including one local or grown ingredient and will be evaluated on:
- Creativity
- Healthy attributes
- Use of fresh, local fruit and/or vegetables
- Ingredients that are available in Kansas and Missouri
- Ability to be recreated in a school setting
- Preferably no grilling, barbecuing or frying
- Healthier seasoning options (minimal salt and sugar)
- Quick and easy to prepare
You don’t have to worry about calorie counts, but here’s a handy chart to help you choose healthy ingredients:

Who Can Enter
Grades: Pre-K through 8th students from Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri, and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

Entries must be submitted electronically and should be posted no later than 11:59:59 p.m. on November 30, 2017. Contest Period entries will be accepted June 13 to November 30, 2017.
Judging
Entries will be judged based on use of local ingredients, creativity, healthy attributes and ability to be recreated in a school setting. Participants are allowed to submit 3-5 photos. Top three finalists will be determined by attendees at the KC Healthy Kids Youth Summit. Judges are food service staff participating in the Farm to School Food Service Leadership Academy.
Technical Requirements
Photos must be in digital format. Photos may not be enhanced with filters, frames, type or other effects. Only minor adjustments such as cropping and/or color correction are acceptable.
Awards
Participants with the highest scoring recipes and one adult chaperone for each will win admission to the KC Healthy Kids Youth Summit in March 2018 . Top three finalists will be determined at event! Finalists will receive Farm to School Academy prize packs during the event. Other top participants will be featured in KC Healthy Kids Farm to School cookbook!

Entrants agree that any image submitted to the competition may be used by KC Healthy Kids for advancing its nonprofit mission in present and future years.
