 Two fifth graders are cooking up change with their winning entries to KC Healthy Kids’ Ultimate Eat Local Recipe Challenge. Their recipes will be featured at the I Am Here Awards tomorrow and will be incorporated into school lunch menus across the metro area, thanks to school food service partners in our Farm to School Academy. Aubrey Bass, a fifth grader from Three Trails Elementary School in Independence, shopped at Drumm Farm for ingredients for her winning Chef Salad. She also entered recipes for Veggies with Ranch, Nutella Berries and Apple Sandwich. Aubrey loves cooking with her family and friends and wants to see healthier options in the lunchroom. Runner up Kaiden Kahler cooked with his grandmother Chris Williams. They made three recipes and after a family taste test, couldn’t pick a favorite so Kaiden submitted all three! Their Rosemary Potatoes, Turkey Burger Meatloaf, and Turkey Burger Shepards Pie. Kaiden loves watching cooking shows on tv. He got his produce at his grandparents’ farm, Precious Petals and Pepperberries Urban Farm. Kaiden is a fifth grader at William Yates Elementary.  Congratulations Aubrey and Kaiden!
The Ultimate Eat Local Recipe Challenge was open to 3rd through 6th graders in Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri. Recipes were required to include at least one fresh, locally grown ingredient and were judged by the following criteria:
