Speak out for lower tax on groceries in Kansas; hearing for SB1604 will be Feb 1

Care about lowering sales tax on food in Kansas? It is time to take action! Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee will hold a hearing on Senate Concurrent Resolution 1604 on Thursday, February 1 at 9:30 a.m..

SCR 1604 was introduced by Senator Tom Holland and others last year and stipulates that a constitutional amendment would be placed on the next statewide general election ballot. That means Kansans could vote on a stair step reduction in sales tax on food from the current 6.5% to 2% over the course of several years.

Now is a good time to take action and let your elected officials that you care about lowering sales tax on food.

Here are ways you can help advocate for SCR 1604:

1. Listen in live and post to social media! The hearing will be live streamed on February 1 at 9:30 am: you can listen in by clicking here and speak out on social media! Here are some ideas:

• Share this infographic that shows the current sales tax rate on food in the Midwest. 
• Use this sample post: “I care about lowering the sales tax on groceries in Kansas. I would rather spend money supporting local businesses in our community. #ksleg please pass SCR 1604.”

2. Send an email or letter to let your legislator know you care about this issue. Urge them to support SCR 1604. Download this template and don’t forget to add your own story. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• How much do you spend on groceries each month? Let your elected official know how much you’d save per year without the sales tax, and tell them you’d rather spend that money supporting businesses in your community.
• Do you leave Kansas to shop in Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma or Colorado, states with low or no sales tax on groceries. Tell them how much shopping you’re doing across the state line.
• Are you on a fixed income? Explain how the high grocery tax impact your shopping habits.
