We're a big family with a small farm in Independence, MO. We have a passion for building soil, growing amazing veggies, and building a vibrant community of local eaters.
Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program serves our neighbors in Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs and Independence with weekly boxes of amazing veggies. We grow food for our members without the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. We love eating fresh food and we love helping our members learn how to use our veggies to make amazing meals. Our CSA boxes are fully customizable by members. We pack each box specifically to each member's order and provide recipe options customized to their choices as well as a vibrant private Facebook group for our community members to connect and share ideas and ask questions about how to best make use of every part of their share including their carrot tops. Nestled in the rolling hills of northwest Missouri, our family's century farm hosts TableTop Farms. As a woman-owned and family-operated venture, we take pride in our seed-to-table approach.
Growing over 50 varieties of Certified Naturally Grown vegetables and herbs yield flavorful and nutrient-dense produce thats healthy for your family. We collaborate with nature, fostering healthy soils abundant with life through thoughtfully managed fertilizers and compost. This creates a thriving habitat for beneficial earthworms, nematodes, and other soil organisms. Our animals thrive through regenerative practices, contributing to the healing of our land. Our South Pole cattle graze exclusively on grass, while our farrow-to-finish hogs, meat birds, and egg layers also enjoy pasture life. They're supplemented with organic grains and any garden scraps they fancy. We love talking about growing food, food education, and nurturing community connections. Join us at the Brookside Farmers Market, Lenexa Farmers Market, or Overland Park Farmers Market. You can also explore our website at tabletopfarmsmo.com. Food Life Joy has been providing microgreens to farmer's markets and restaurants since 2016. We use organic or non-GMO seeds (if organic is not available) and organic grow mix, that's it! Co-owners Laura Christensen and Katherine Kelly have many years of farming experience and in 2019 started 2 Birds Farm on 20 acres in Kansas City, KS. At 2 Birds Farm we love growing great vegetables, eating tasty food and appreciating the wildlife, wild weather and wild challenges of farming in our area. We sell our vegetables through a CSA that offers home and office delivery of shares and at the Brookside Farmers' Market in Kansas City, MO. We currently have about two acres of open field, three high tunnels and a greenhouse in production on the farm. We also have a small flock of happy hens that provide eggs. In April and May we use our greenhouse to produce a wide variety of vegetable bedding plants for home gardeners. We offer more than 50 varieties of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, greens and more. From heirlooms to hybrids to varieties suited to containers or square foot gardening, we have you covered. New Roots is a training program that empowers refugees, immigrants and English Language Learner farmers to develop sustainable businesses. The collaboration between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and Cultivate KC helps individuals with an agricultural background in their home countries adapt to Kansas City climate and culture while supporting their families. Our trainee and graduate farmers use organic principles and sell their produce to local restaurants, at farmers markets and through Farm Share subscriptions. JCCC Open Petal Farm was started on two acres of campus in 2010 to provide a learning lab for students in the Sustainable Agriculture program. It has since grown to 3 acres and added a mixed fruit orchard, 300 blueberry bushes, a student designed edible forest, a moveable high tunnel, a solar storage shed, a coolbot refrigerated trailer, and numerous other projects. Produce is sold through Rolling Prairie CSA and an on-campus farmers market. Pat and Rachels Gardens LLC is a USDA certified organic family farm located between Lawrence, Kansas and Olathe, Kansas just south of DeSoto. Jim and Sandra Leek and their children worked together to create Pat and Rachel's Gardens LLC. Pat and Rachel are two children of our clan who have passed away, and we created this farm to honor them. As a family we continue to grow local, sustainable, and organic food to honor our Maker. We value community and believe we can help create a healthier future for us all by nurturing this community from the ground up. We are Solar Organic and Local. SOL food. In addition to producing food, we are a Certified Organic Processor which means we are licensed to wash, prepare, process, and freeze, and freeze dry organic products (which will be available at the Brookside Farmers Market and Overland Park Farmers Market as well as The Community Mercantile in Lawrence). As part of our dedication to the local food network, we are farmer members of the Kansas City Food Hub where James served as a board member for four years. We are primarily solar powered and use a pond-fed, drip irrigation system to use resources as sustainably as we can here in Kansas. We invite you to support Pat and Rachels Gardens in creating a healthier future by buying Solar Organic Local food: SOL food. James Leek, co-owner of Pat & Rachels Gardens has supported research and dissemination of best practices through SARE and USDA grants. He has shared his knowledge with the community through keynote presentations at the Kansas State Olathe campus and at the University of Missouri Extension in St. Peters, Missouri. The Fruitful Hills CSA community of horse-powered family farms grows the products for 25 weeks of deliveries in the summer, beginning early May and ending mid-October. Our community also grows products for a winter CSA, beginning mid-November, and ending in late April with 12 bi-weekly deliveries. Fruitful Hills CSA grows high quality, healthy products. We started with vegetables 15 years ago, and now include eggs, chicken, turkey, beef, pork, raw dairy, honey, canned goods, cornmeal, popcorn, and apple cider. Fruitful Hills CSA offers farmers in our community the opportunity to take part in our grower’s circle. Members of our grower’s circle must uphold exacting standards for quality and land stewardship. Eight families grow a variety of vegetables for the summer and winter CSA seasons with consistently high quality. Our crops include heirloom and hybrid tomatoes, lettuces, baby leaf salad mixes, carrots, radishes, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choi, kale, peppers, cherry tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet corn, zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, potatoes, and strawberries. Share subscribers in the summer 2023 season received strawberries for 5 weeks, melons for 9 weeks, tomatoes for 19 weeks, and lettuce for 16 weeks. Our winter share subscribers enjoy a mix of root crops, fresh and storage vegetables, canned goods, fresh salad mixes, and head lettuce. Using high tunnels in the winter season gives our subscribers soil-grown fresh greens. We delivered fresh greens even in December, January, and February. We grow varieties harvested and delivered at the peak of their flavor and nutrition. We grow for flavor, not for easy shipping. We grow vegetables high in minerals and nutrients. We avoid the use of synthetic sprays and fertilizer, only using products labeled for organic production. We build soils with green cover crops, compost, and manure, using proper withdrawal periods for manure application of 120 days before harvest. Using horsepower for field work and growing crops in high tunnels, we generate a small carbon footprint. We heat the high tunnels with wood in the coldest days of winter for the early tomatoes. Doing so allows us to deliver to subscribers fresh, soil-grown tomatoes early in the summer season. We raise our animals outdoors on free-range pasture. During extreme weather, we provide proper shelter. Fruitful Hills growers do not use mRNA vaccines. A benefit to subscribers is the annual farm visit and tour, held in early summer. We invite subscribers to visit the farms to see our farming practices and talk with the people growing their food. We feel it’s proper to say, “From our fields to your table, using sustainable farming practices with your family’s health and the health of the environment for future generations in mind.” We look forward to having you join us for the 2024 summer CSA season starting May 8. We are a fourteen-acre urban farm in southern Wyandotte County bringing people of all ages, abilities, and ancestries on-farm, hands-on connecting them to the land and soil, themselves, and their community. We scaffold our educational opportunities so that pre-k children can get outside, move around, and experience farm life; elementary-aged children can feel the joy of growing and eating fresh food; and tweens, teens, and young adults can begin to experience regenerative agriculture as part of the entire food system, and perhaps as a vocation having internalized the skills they need during their time visiting. We participate as a host farm in the Growing Growers program. We grow organic food and feed our own 40-member CSA, host a weekly on-farm pay-what-you're-able farmers market that accepts SNAP and utilizes the Double-Up Food Bucks program. Hello! We are David's Pasture: a multi-generational multi-family multi-species pasture-based farm just east of the KC area started in 2011 by the Kesten family. We believe in working with Creation to heal the ground and ourselves. We raise cattle, swine, chickens and turkeys out on pasture using intensive rotation and regenerative practices. We want to build up healthy soil and raise happy animals! We also want a more transparent food system: come tour our farm in the summer and see what we do. We deliver meats and eggs to homes like yours on a weekly basis. We support other local businesses by partnering with them in livestock production or offering their products on our website at davidspasture.com. In 2003, we began growing organic fruits and vegetables on Rebecca’s family farm in rural, northeastern Clay County, Missouri. We focus on building the soil through biological farming methods, including extensive cover cropping. The farm is home to two farmers, two cats, 140 hens, two roosters and countless frogs, butterflies, birds and insects. Our infrastructure is focused on sustainable energy and includes a passive solar greenhouse, 30 gpm solar-powered irrigation system, electric tractor and utility vehicle, and a 20kW solar array. The 200+ acre family farm is planted in native grasses, good habitat for deer, turkey, quail, coyotes, and many other species of wildlife. We grow an acre of crops for our live culture fermented krauts, kimchi and pickles, as well as a large community garden for ourselves and our workers. A laying flock of 80 pastured hens provides eggs for the crew and customers at the farmers market. Our fermented foods are produced on the farm in our commercial kitchen and are sold through subscription, at the Brookside Community Market and local stores. In 2019, we installed an alley-cropping system of berms and swales with perennial plantings. This work is ongoing and next stages include planting more tree and shrubs along with the incorporation of a small flock of sheep. Pinwheel Farm began as a dream — first the fantasy of a tiny cabin in the woods, raising sheep and spinning yarn…various revisions over the years…then much later a roughly sketched business plan for a 20 acre vegetable farm as a class project.
We supply non-irrigated vegetables and other horticultural crops, forage-fed lamb meat, poultry and wool products to our community through on-farm sales, the Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market, and locally owned restaurants. Our mission is to help people to live simply, sustainably, and spiritually as part of the Earth’s Community of Life by developing, modeling and teaching innovative alternatives to conventional input-dependent agriculture and consumerist lifestyles and economies. The Buffalo Seed Company was launched by Dr. Matthew & Nancy Kost in October, 2018. Nancy is from the Altiplano of Bolivia and grew up growing quinoa, potato, and llamas in a resilient system that predates the Inca Empire. She has since acquired a bachelor degree in agronomy from Earth University in Costa Rica, and a Master of Science Degree in tomato breeding from The Ohio State University.
Matthew is originally from Kansas City and has returned after obtaining a Bachelor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Agroecology from The Ohio State University. Matthew has also worked in conserving amaranth and quinoa landrace diversity in Peru and arid adapted crops in the Greater Southwest. Matthew and Nancy have deep knowledge and wisdom of seeds, seed systems, evolution, ecology, and adaptation. Importantly, we have two little helpers that mean the world to us, Silveria and Thomas. The Buffalo Seed Company supplies growers with bioregionally adapting seeds to increase the resiliency and sustainability of our local food systems. While our local food systems are strengthening, the seed system underlying them are far from local. In fact, many seeds offered to growers are sourced from outside their bioregion and often times outside the country. It is time for us to integrate locally adapting, as well as adaptable seeds, into our local food systems and to secure a bioregional seed source that can withstand change. The Buffalo Seed Company has taken on this task as our contribution to push local food production in our bioregion to the next level, locally grown crops from bioregionally grown seeds. This is not a new idea, but the foundations of truly resilient and sustainable agricultural systems; this can be seen in every crop center of origin around the world. Green Gate Family Farm was started in 2010 by Ken and Kate. They have invested significantly in the infrastructure of their farm- a new added a new well and an in-ground irrigation system; established several new growing fields; installed lots of new fences and done fence repairs; built two high tunnels (both 30'x96') and a heated greenhouse (30'x46'). The latest project was to complete a significant upgrade and remodeling of the metal barn that now has new floors and walls (about 1200 square feet) and where they added electric power, running water, extensive fruit and produce handling and processing areas and equipment, and a walk-in refrigerator. Green Gate Family Farm believes strongly in a 'soil first' understanding and philosophy of farming and food production, and our annual soil tests have shown good improvement in our soils. We entered the transition period required for Organic Certification immediately in 2010 (this requires functioning under all the regulations of being organic, without calling your farm organic), and after the three year transition period was completed, Green Gate Family Farm was officially Certified Organic by the State of Oklahoma's Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in 2013. We have remained Certified Organic and continued to strongly support the USDA National Organic Program since then. Our personal goals include safe, healthy food for our table, as well as for our customers, and a farm property that fits in with the ecology of the land we live on. We are striving to be a sustainable, ecologically friendly farm, and a successful farm business. We believe in building a strong food system and are proud members of the Kansas City Food Hub, a cooperative of farmers working together to sell into the regional food system. We really like to integrate our agricultural systems utilizing the resources that are available to us. We are master beekeepers and have been in business for more than 34 years. Our small herd of beautiful pastured Jersey cows provides us with our fresh cream topped raw milk that we sell here at our farm store. We make a variety of artisanal cave-aged cheese, fresh cheese, and other delicious Jersey milk products for our customers to enjoy. Wild Alive is a woman owned and operated small business established in 2015 and operating out of Lawrence, KS. We partner with local area farmers in the Douglas, Johnson and Jefferson county region to preserve fruit & vegetables and utilize the immunities in the local community’s soil. Produce seconds that would otherwise be composted or thrown out are used to create nutrient rich products like sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, miso & hot sauce. The process stays the same but the produce varies by what is seasonally available each month of the harvest. A wild fermentation process is used to create these zippy products, no vinegar or starter cultures found here, only salt & the bacteria that is naturally occurring on the produce. This process creates a probiotic rich environment that allows nutrients to become more readily available for the body’s absorption. Our mission is to share our love of the deeply ancient and cultural practice of fermentation with others. To bring a new level of nutrition, passion, and magic into people's lives. You can find us at several area farmers markets, retail grocery stores, farm stores and at some of your favorite local restaurants. |
